When we were in Miami, our driveway host, Ian, told us about a little spot in Mississippi we needed to visit: Oxford. He was right. This little slice of the south is the stuff right out of a southern gothic novel—and for good reason. This is the home of William Faulkner.

Frank Lloyd Wright
This is Miracle and I’s fourth Frank Lloyd Wright house—the Rosenbaum House. It is the only FLW house in Alabama and perhaps the best example of his Usonian design (made for middle class folks, which is absolutely hysterical by today’s standards). With any luck, we will see a few more of his houses on thisContinue reading “Frank Lloyd Wright”
Podcast: Peter & Andrea
We caught up with Andrea Bowker and Peter Kraiker—a couple of soft-spoken hardcore adventurers in their Old North Toronto backyard. They own a magnificent 1982 matador orange diesel Vanagon Westfalia named Babe. Babe has been Peter’s mobile office and a makeshift ambulance.
Tennessee odds & ends
We didn’t exactly have the normal stay in central Tennessee. In fact, we didn’t even set foot in Nashville proper, opting for more rural locales and some cool hikes. Here’s some highlights:
The last of Tennessee we’ll see
We loved Tennessee, but it is time to keep moving. We will definitely return—hopefully once we are off the road and can go down for a night on the town without worrying about Jolene too much. Tennessee is lovely. Bob and Bonnie, as I mentioned, were wonderful hosts when we were south of Nashville. AndContinue reading “The last of Tennessee we’ll see”
Taking a break (continued)
Not only did the drums not show up at Napa, but the cylinders promptly proved to be absolute shit. We put them in place and on the first pump of the brake these cylinders squirted more fluid out than if shot pressurized liquid into a colander. Bob, ever patient and good-natured, took out each cylinderContinue reading “Taking a break (continued)”
Taking a brake
Somewhere halfway between Memphis and Nashville, the bus began making a grinding noise when I hit the brakes. Ever since the second engine breakdown I have been paranoid about any little thing that goes wrong. There’s only a handful of things that make a dry rubbing sound when you hit the brakes and at theContinue reading “Taking a brake”
Podcast: Steve
We caught up with Steve Roberts, who owns the old army surplus store in Jasper, Ontario. It’s an old white cider block building that looks fairly nondescript from the outside. But once you step inside, you realize it is a sprawling, wild place. We followed Steve from room to room—sometimes hidden room to hidden room—inContinue reading “Podcast: Steve”
Missouri in review
Way back in the early days of our trip, we stayed in Lubec, Maine. We met a mother and son there who were visiting from St. Louis. They invited us to visit them when we passed through Missouri. Well, after our month of detours and alternate plans, we had the chance to pass through TheContinue reading “Missouri in review”
Podcast: Brad and Susie
Happy Valentine’s Day! We were traveling through Canada when we were able to catch up with Susan and her husband, Brad, as well as their dinner guest, Linda, at their cottage on the shores of Lake Pemichangan in Quebec. We spent the day doing a little work on their Eurovan and ended the day sittingContinue reading “Podcast: Brad and Susie”
