Season 4 is live!

We traveled across New England and into Canada, crossed into Michigan and the upper Great Lakes States to bring you stories from folks who have had an adventure or two in a VW Bus. This season we’ve met collectors, mechanics, businesswomen, and more than a few roadtrippers. You can listen to all the episodes wherever fine podcasts are available. Or, if you like suspense, you come back here to the blog each Monday as I highlight each story teller.

Made it to Minnesota (again)

Neil is a beast. A road warrior. Cannonball Run has got nothing on him. We made it to Minnesota just as the sun went down and the temperature with it. We pushed the bus off the trailer in subzero temperatures. As I pushed the bus up the driveway, I slipped on the ice and Neil kept the bus from rolling over me. Last week we were under the shade of palm trees watching dolphins jump in the Gulf of Mexico. This week we are bundled up and snowshoeing, ice fishing and waiting for the bus to be repaired. In the meantime we are hanging out with our friends, Shawn and Emma, at the Happy Productions studios. Things could be worse, I suppose. Good friends, good music, and good times.

Playlist: Alabama

We only spent a single night in ‘Bamaland, but we hope to return in a couple weeks. Here’s a few tunes meant to keep our minds on the roads ahead. Fun facts: Alabama is home to a couple records including the world’s largest office chair and the world’s largest cast iron statue. Also, they build rockets.

The flat tire

Not a matching set, but a working pair nonetheless.

Last we left off, the engine had broken and our friend, Neil, came to fetch us south of Tallahassee. As we pulled away, I looked in the mirror and noticed that our trailer had a flat. Like a flat flat. Like it was squishy and plumed out on the packed sand road.

Neil’s here!

Neil in action. Nevermind that I am taking pictures and not helping at the moment.

Neil arrived! We haven’t seen our dear friend and one-time roommate since we rolled through Ohio after the last engine rebuild. As I mentioned yesterday, he is about to cart us and the bus all over the damned country.

The kindness of our friends

Our new friend, Blacky.

Maybe you’ve noticed some backsliding on our blog as of late. That’s because we had a major breakdown. I’ll spare you all the technical stuff and just say this: a part broke in the engine that will be a major and not-easy repair. For those of you playing along at home, this is the second major repair we’ve had to make. Sam, our engine builder from Minnesota, is a standup guy and will take care of the issue. Here’s the full story:

The Forgotten Coast

Head north and west from just about all of Florida and you’ll find our favorite region in the Sunshine State—the Forgotten Coast. Last time I posted, we had visited Cedar Key—a cool, laid-back town with plenty of places to relax. Well, we moved a little farther up the coast, around the bend and into the Apalachicola region where the forests abound right up to the white sandy shores along the the Gulf.

Technical difficulties

Editing Season 4 of the podcast when Hindenburg says it needs to update. The update then makes it impossible to open the program with my current OS. Lesson to be learned here: never update a software while in the middle of a project. Next step is to update the OS and hope for compatibility and then restore the files. If that doesn’t work, I panic.
