Cedar Key

After my post lamenting the tourism of Key West, our Miami driveway host, a VW guru named Ian, told us that we would find old Florida at Cedar Key. I wasn’t exactly sure if Old Florida really existed or not and I felt a little like Ponce De Leon chasing after a mythical place whileContinue reading “Cedar Key”

Key West in review

Miracle and I both wanted to be in Key West on our 1-year anniversary. We imagined sitting on a beach eating key lime pie and sipping champagne while the waves rolled in and out. Miracle had read about Key West via Martha Gellhorn’s letters. (Gellhorn, for what it is worth is twice the badass HemingwayContinue reading “Key West in review”

Springs n things

We got into Florida nearly a week ago and have now made it mostly to the south end. Man, it is a long, busy state. Before we left Ohio, Miracle said she wanted to swim in as many bodies of water as possible—tide pools, oceans, rivers, lakes, and springs. So far in Florida, we’ve managedContinue reading “Springs n things”

Christmas in Oz

Our life on the road is a charmed one. That is probably mostly Miracle’s handiwork. She has a way of asking for things, of finding things and stumbling on good luck like no one I have ever met. It was one of many hundreds of reasons I knew I wanted to spend my time withContinue reading “Christmas in Oz”

Boosted

Florida for the holidays has its charms and drawbacks. Of course we are missing our family and friends as we live out here on the road. And the weather is decidedly unChristmasy. That’s great at night when we want to sleep without the hum of the parking heater, but the juxtaposition of wreaths and lightsContinue reading “Boosted”

Georgia in review

Georgia. Our plans for Georgia changed more than any state on this trip so far. Originally, we were going to stop through Athens to see one of Miracle’s friends and then wander south into Savannah before taking the A1A into Florida. Then, we interviewed my former neighbor, Ben, and he told us about his palContinue reading “Georgia in review”

North Carolina in review

The wild and winding roads of western North Carolina zigzagged us across the parkway and into Tennessee (but more on Tennessee when we give it the full treatment in a couple months) and then into the more central part of the state where we stayed on Lake Norman. It’s been an incredible week and hereContinue reading “North Carolina in review”

Dog-friendly!

North Carolina wins the prize for most dog-friendly state thus far. Not only are dogs allowed in regular stores where it shouldn’t be an issue (like hardware stores, auto parts stores, etc.), dogs are allowed in some bars. Dogs are a part of the family here. Campgrounds haven’t uncharged us for having a dog. DogsContinue reading “Dog-friendly!”
