Just hanging out at the studio

Gotta say, as terrible as engine troubles can be, we have some great luck with breakdowns. We traveled back to the ice lands of the north, where we could be miserable. Where we could be slowly going broke renting a hotel room or paying out the nose for cleaning fees on AirBnB. Instead, we hadContinue reading “Just hanging out at the studio”

Help get us farther down the road

When we set out on our great bus adventure we had a budget—a budget that included a column for catastrophic breakdowns. But, now as we are five months into the adventure, and on our third motor, we are feeling the squeeze of the budget. We came very close to calling it quits when we brokeContinue reading “Help get us farther down the road”

Dog-friendly!

North Carolina wins the prize for most dog-friendly state thus far. Not only are dogs allowed in regular stores where it shouldn’t be an issue (like hardware stores, auto parts stores, etc.), dogs are allowed in some bars. Dogs are a part of the family here. Campgrounds haven’t uncharged us for having a dog. DogsContinue reading “Dog-friendly!”

Pooping

You’ll see plenty of vanlifers Instagram about their meals—decadent things served in cast iron skillets with the steam still wafting from the top. Mugs of pour-over coffee. “This is van life,” they proclaim. And, sure, it is. You can eat great while camping. But what everyone really wants to know is what happens on theContinue reading “Pooping”

Breakdowns and getting unstuck

Breaking down is demoralizing for a lot of reasons—mostly that you are stuck. The trip of a lifetime, the open road, adventures awaiting and suddenly you’re stagnant. Then the news comes: that engine you had rebuilt is a stinker. It’s a goner. The money you spent? Also gone.

Happy Productions

We had a great week hanging out with our friends from Happy Productions. We hung out at the studio; I got to be on the radio, and we saw live music. Shawn and Emma, the team behind Happy Productions are doing some really cool things. They partner with local businesses, host a music festival, andContinue reading “Happy Productions”

Melville White Church Art Gallery

One thing we have missed on the road has been access to art galleries. Traveling with Jolene has endless benefits… and a few drawbacks. And one of the drawbacks is a fine arts museum’s reluctance to release dogs around their one of a kind artworks. We had sort of resigned ourselves to the idea thatContinue reading “Melville White Church Art Gallery”

Healthcare on the road

You’ve all gotten to see the good stuff on the blog—food reviews and pictures of wineries and oceans and mountains and our dear sweet pup, Jolene. Can we take a break from Instagram-worthy stuff to talk about healthcare? I know it’s not as much fun, but it’s worth talking about.

The buck stops here

Being out on the road is refreshing for many, many reasons—fresh air, new adventures every day, meeting people. The list goes on. But I also love the accountability—the feeling of being responsible for the decisions and successes and failures on the road. It’s a whole different vibe than many workplaces where accountability becomes a gameContinue reading “The buck stops here”
